Weight Loss Challenges After Pregnancy

By Trishia Serinton

Pregnancy will always cause women to gain weight, it's a natural part of the process. There is extra fat deposits around the mid-section of the mother during pregnancy which is referred to as 'baby weight', and of course while pregnant, the baby's weight is also a big factor. Losing this weight that has been gained following the delivery of a baby can be quite a task. If the mother had some extra weight before pregnancy, it can actually make the process even tougher.

Here, we will be looking at some effective ways to shed weight after having a baby.

1. Don't forget to stay hydrated

To prevent dehydration after pregnancy, be sure that you consume a lot of liquids. Having plenty of water and other liquids will make you feel more full as well, and it may prevent over-eating. Don't over-do it though, drink only what your body craves.

2. Strict dieting is not good

This may sound as surprising advice but trying to lose weight by following a strict diet can reduce the amount of nutrients that you passed down to your baby through breast milk. While this is not strictly proven, it must also be borne in mind that eating a healthy, nourishing diet is sufficient to allow for slow and natural weight loss rather than a rapid drop in weight. Eating lots of vegetables and fruits are great ways to relieve hunger and get plenty of vitamins, and having a more even and steady weight loss.

3. Regular exercise is important

Plain old exercise is still quite effective. Aroebics and other cardiovascular and strengthening exercises will help burn calories and keep bones strong and muscle strength up. Exercises can include a brisk walk, jogging, swimming and cross-training. Mood is greatly affected by exercise as well, due to the release of endorphins. This helps the mother handle the stress of looking after a baby a lot more effectively. Before anyone begins a new exercise program, it is important to seek the advice of a doctor, to ensure it is safe.

4. Breastfeeding should be continued

Breastfeeding provides the infant with the essential nutrients and fats that are helpful in building up immunity and providing the necessary nutrition. There are conflicting opinions as to whether or not breastfeeding can actually help others lose weight. Even if it doesn't, it is no reason to stop breastfeeding an infant.

5. Be sure to stay well-rested

Going through pregnancy can be taxing on the body, and looking after an infant can raise stress levels even further. Studies have revealed that new mothers must get over 7 hours of sleep a night in order to lose pregnancy weight.

Synopsis

A new mother can use these simple techniques to effectively lose the weight that the pregnancy has caused for them.
